ICANN Adds DNS-Abuse Timing Data: What the New Metric Measures

On September 3, 2026, ICANN added uptime measurements to Domain Metrica, its domain-data analysis platform. The update helps researchers examine how long reported domains remain reachable through DNS. For website owners, the important distinction is what this timing data measures—and what it does not establish.

What changed

The new Time to Mitigation (TTM) metric estimates the interval between a reported domain’s first and last successful DNS resolution. Domain Search now includes this timing information alongside monitoring status, resolution observations and a mitigation outcome where available.

Read the measurement carefully

This is a DNS-reachability observation for reported domains, not a measurement of whether an ordinary website is healthy or safe to use. The announcement does not establish the cause of every resolution change or provide a service-level guarantee for individual reports. Avoid treating one number as a verdict on a domain owner or provider.

ICANN describes broader dashboards and API access as possible future capabilities, not features already delivered by this release.
