Redirect a NicNames Domain to Another Web Address

23 October 2026

A redirect sends visitors from one web address to another. In NicNames DNS Records, you can choose a Permanent redirect or Temporary redirect for a host and enter the destination URL. Here is how to plan the change, avoid clashing with existing records, and check the result.

Choose the right destination and redirect

Write down the exact address visitors should enter and the full destination URL, including https://. For example, you might send go.example.com to a campaign page on your main site. Check that the destination opens before changing anything. Decide whether the move is intended to last: choose Permanent redirect for a lasting move and Temporary redirect for a short-lived destination. Google treats permanent redirects as a signal that the target should become canonical; a temporary redirect generally leaves the source URL as the preferred search result. The NicNames menu labels do not, by themselves, confirm the HTTP status code returned for your particular setup, so test that separately if it matters to your migration plan.

Add the redirect in NicNames

  1. Sign in and open Dashboard → Domains → ClassicDNS. Select the domain, then open DNS Records → Manage.
  2. Confirm the domain uses Free Name-Servers in its domain settings. If it uses custom nameservers, make the change at the provider that hosts the active DNS zone instead.
  3. Review the records for the exact host you want to redirect. Do not leave a conflicting website record on that same host or remove mail-related records by accident. If the host is already in use, plan the change before saving.
  4. Choose + Add record, enter the host in Name, select Permanent redirect or Temporary redirect from the type menu, and enter the complete destination in the URL field. Review the name, type, and URL, then select Save.

Check the result

Open the source address in a private browser window and confirm it arrives at the intended destination, with the expected protocol and path. Check both the root domain and www separately if you want both to forward; they are different hostnames. A redirect to a website does not transfer the domain registration or automatically move email. If you are changing an established site, also update important links to point directly to the new address and avoid redirect chains. If the result is unexpected, compare the active nameservers and existing records with the NicNames DNS troubleshooting guide, or contact NicNames Support with the source and destination addresses and the behavior you observed.
