Connect a NicNames Domain to Squarespace with DNS

22 October 2026

A domain registered with NicNames can point to a Squarespace site without changing its registrar. The key is to edit DNS where the domain’s active nameservers are hosted, copy the verification and website records from Squarespace, and leave mail records intact. Here is a careful way to connect both the root domain and www.

Start the connection in Squarespace

Use an active Squarespace site on a trial or paid website plan. In its Domains panel, choose “Use a Domain I Own,” enter the full domain, and continue through “Connect Domain.” If NicNames is not listed as a provider, choose “Other.” Keep Squarespace’s DNS settings panel open: its verification host is unique to your site, and that panel is the final reference for the record values.

Find the DNS host that actually answers for your domain

In your NicNames account, open Domains → ClassicDNS and select the domain. The domain page shows its Name-Servers and a DNS Records section. If it uses NicNames Free Name-Servers, choose DNS Records → Manage. That editor lists Name, TTL, Type and Data, with “+ Add record” and Save. If the domain uses custom nameservers, make the DNS changes at that nameserver provider instead; editing an inactive zone will not connect the website. For background, see our domain lookup guide.

Add verification and website records

In the active DNS zone, add a CNAME whose Name is the unique verification code shown by Squarespace and whose Data points to verify.squarespace.com. If Squarespace shows no verification code, follow its on-screen instructions rather than inventing one.

For the www host, Squarespace’s DNS reference lists a CNAME to ext-cust.squarespace.com. For the bare domain, its current reference lists four A-record values: 198.185.159.144, 198.185.159.145, 198.49.23.144 and 198.49.23.145. In NicNames, use the domain itself as the root Name if the editor does not accept @. Compare every value against the live Squarespace panel before saving, because your site’s instructions take priority.

Check existing records before replacing anything. A www CNAME cannot coexist with another record at the same name, and an old root A or AAAA record can send visitors to the previous site. Remove or replace only conflicting website-routing records after confirming what they serve. Preserve MX and other email-related records; changing those can disrupt mail.

Confirm the connection

Save the DNS changes at the authoritative provider, then return to Squarespace’s Domains panel to check the connection. Squarespace says the connection can take 24–48 hours to work properly. When its status reads Connected, visit both the bare domain and www and check that they reach the intended site over HTTPS. If the status remains unresolved, compare the exact hostnames and values, confirm the active nameservers, and use our DNS troubleshooting checklist.
