ICANN to Join IGF 2025 as Internet Governance Enters a Critical Phase

11 June 2025

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will participate in the 19th annual Internet Governance Forum (IGF), taking place in Lillestrøm, Norway, from 23 to 27 June 2025. This year’s event comes at a particularly significant time, just ahead of the WSIS+20 review scheduled for 2025. ICANN sees this forum as a crucial venue for reinforcing its long-standing commitment to an inclusive, multistakeholder approach to Internet governance.

With the theme “Building our Multistakeholder Digital Future,” IGF 2025 aims to address both emerging and persistent challenges surrounding digital cooperation and Internet governance. ICANN’s presence at the forum underscores its ongoing efforts to ensure that the Internet remains a single, open, and globally interoperable network.

A Global Conversation on Internet Governance

IGF 2025 arrives during a moment of accelerated global discussion about the future of the Internet. As the digital landscape evolves, so do the governance models needed to keep it stable and accessible for all. ICANN considers the multistakeholder approach—bringing together governments, private sector actors, civil society, and the technical community—as the most effective method to manage the Internet’s complex infrastructure.

ICANN's participation will support broader conversations about how Internet policy is developed and how the community can address the challenges and opportunities ahead. In particular, the organization continues to advocate for collaborative, bottom-up decision-making that keeps the Internet secure and inclusive.

Reinforcing the Multistakeholder Model

ICANN views IGF 2025 as a timely opportunity to reaffirm its dedication to the multistakeholder model in a changing policy environment. This model has been central to how the Domain Name System (DNS) is coordinated globally and will remain critical as the world evaluates the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) twenty years on.

By engaging with global stakeholders in Lillestrøm, ICANN aims to help strengthen trust in the institutions and mechanisms that underpin the digital ecosystem. As debates on digital sovereignty and cross-border Internet regulation intensify, the need for inclusive dialogue and technical stability becomes more important than ever.

Looking Ahead

ICANN encourages active participation in IGF 2025, especially from those who care about the future of the Internet and its governance. As the world prepares for a new chapter in digital policy, ICANN remains committed to fostering cooperation, transparency, and resilience in how the Internet is managed.

This year’s forum represents more than just a policy meeting—it is a step toward shaping the kind of Internet we want to preserve and evolve for generations to come.
