A Framer site can use a subdomain such as studio.example.com while the main website and email remain where they are. Add that address to your Framer project, copy the CNAME target Framer provides, and update the DNS zone that serves your NicNames domain. Here is how to check the right zone and verify the connection.
1. Add the address to your Framer project
Publish the Framer project first. In Framer, open Site Settings → Hosting → Domains, choose Connect a domain you own, and enter the complete subdomain you want, such as studio.example.com. Framer displays the DNS record needed for that project. Copy its current CNAME target; do not assume a value from an older guide is still the one your project needs. Framer’s current help describes a CNAME for a subdomain, separate from the A records used for an apex domain.
Choose a label that does not already host a live service. Moving studio.example.com to Framer changes that hostname, but does not require moving example.com, www.example.com, or your email.
2. Find the active DNS zone in NicNames
In NicNames, open Domains → ClassicDNS and select your domain. Read Name-Servers. If it shows Free Name-Servers, open DNS Records → Manage to edit the NicNames zone. If it shows Custom Name-Servers, make the change with the DNS provider named by those servers instead. A domain can remain registered at NicNames while another provider answers its DNS. The NicNames domain lookup guide helps you inspect delegation before editing.
3. Add one CNAME for the subdomain
In a NicNames Free Name-Servers zone, select + Add record and choose CNAME. Enter the subdomain label, such as studio, in Name and the target shown by Framer in Host alias. Review any existing record at that same name before saving: a CNAME cannot share its hostname with another DNS record. Replace an old record only if you intend to move that specific subdomain. Leave unrelated root, www, MX and other email records alone, then select Save.
4. Check the domain in Framer
Return to Framer’s domain settings and check the connection status. Open the exact subdomain in a browser after Framer reports it connected. DNS answers can take time to refresh; if the site does not appear, compare the active nameservers, CNAME name and target with the values Framer currently shows. The NicNames DNS troubleshooting checklist explains how to distinguish an unsaved or wrong record from a cached answer. If the NicNames form rejects the entry, contact NicNames Support with the hostname and record details, without sharing passwords or private tokens.
