ICANN Calls for RFI Input on New gTLD Program's Next Round Auctions

18 August 2025

On 18 August 2025, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) issued a Request for Information (RFI) inviting potential auction service providers to submit feedback related to the next application round of the New Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLD) Program. The RFI aims to assess how closely ICANN’s proposed auction rules and procedures align with existing operational systems and to identify potential areas where implementation adjustments may be needed.

This initiative focuses particularly on the ascending‑clock, second‑price auction format. ICANN has confirmed it will maintain this model, but seeks expert input on how best to execute it in a way that ensures fairness, transparency, and efficiency. Providers are encouraged to offer insights on how their current platforms and operational frameworks can accommodate ICANN’s approach and where alignment might be challenging.

Cost Structures & Vendor Practices Under Review

Another key focus of the RFI is understanding how auction-related costs might be embedded into the larger gTLD application process. ICANN is particularly interested in learning more about existing industry norms for payment structures and best practices around escrow management in auction services.

This feedback will directly influence the refinement of ICANN’s expectations and will help inform a future Request for Proposal (RFP) that will be used to officially select vendors. By evaluating the feasibility of different implementation strategies, ICANN aims to ensure that its auction model is practical and scalable within real-world service provider frameworks.

Participation & Submission Details

This RFI is open to all interested auction service providers. To express interest, potential participants must send an email including the organization name, a contact person, and their contact details. Providers will then be granted access to ICANN’s sourcing tool to formally submit their responses.

The deadline to submit completed RFI responses is 3 October 2025 at 23:59 UTC. This timeline allows ICANN to gather and review market feedback before advancing to the next procurement stage for auction operations in the New gTLD Program’s upcoming round.
