Australia's .au registry ended September 2026 with 4,427,175 domain names under management, according to auDA's monthly report. That is 3.1% more than a year earlier. New registrations during September totaled 66,140, up 29% from September 2025, while the report's namespace breakdown shows where the names sit.
What changed in September
auDA's September 2026 registry report puts the total .au domain base at 4,427,175 names, compared with 4,416,817 at the end of August and 4,293,793 in September 2025. The year-over-year increase is 3.1%. These are registered names under management at month end, not a count of active websites, businesses or individual owners.
The report lists 66,140 new domains during September. That is below August's 67,459 but 29% above the 51,263 reported for September 2025. A monthly registration flow and the total registered base answer different questions: renewals, expirations and deletions also affect the month-end total.
Where .au names are registered
At September's close, com.au accounted for 3,320,672 names. Directly registered .au names accounted for 819,840. The report also lists 177,523 net.au names, down 4.7% from September 2025, and 70,435 org.au names, up 1.4% year over year. The figures show a different trend in each namespace; they do not indicate whether any exact name is available.
What a domain buyer can take from the figures
If an Australian-facing name is on your shortlist, start with the NicNames .au domain page and check the exact name and current terms. Compare the namespace that fits your use case and verify its eligibility rules before registering. The size of a registry does not make one extension a guaranteed fit, and a registered name may be parked or unused.
